A hotfix to address ongoing matchmaking issues related to Halo Infinite"s Big Team Battle mode is slated to arrive in the middle of next week, according to developer 343 Industries.
The patch has completed testing and is currently going through the Xbox certification process and should be good to go for next week barring no new issues arise, 343 writes on the Halo Waypoint forums. Big Team Battle has suffered from varying levels of unplayability over the last few weeks due to matchmaking issues that would cause players to disconnect or fail to load into a match. The issue is more severe for large groups of players.
As a thank you for players patiently waiting for the issue to be resolved over the holiday break, 343 is giving out five XP boosts and five challenge swaps to all players who log in following the release of next week"s hotfix. The free boosts and challenge swaps offer will be claimable for about a month, 343 says.
Apple has recently been cracking down on Wordle clone games looking to cash in on the success of an unrelated--and free--browser-based puzzle game. One app developer, however, found himself in an even stranger situation, as he created an app five years ago with the same name. It"s unrelated to the currently popular Wordle game, but the older app is still seeing a huge spike in downloads.
Writing in an extended thread on Twitter, developer Steven Cravotta explained that when he was 18, he built an app called Wordle, which was another word-based puzzle game, and decided to stop working on it after it had about 100,000 downloads because his previous app had been more successful. After having almost no new downloads for several years, it experienced a massive spike, which he attributed to people hearing about the new Wordle game and searching for it on the App Store.
Here’s how a mobile game I built 5 years ago suddenly got blown up by The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Jimmy Fallon.— Steven (@StevenCravotta) January 12, 2022
Because his app is monetized, Cravotta started getting proceeds through the new users. About 200,000 have downloaded his Wordle app in the last week alone, and he contacted the browser-based Wordle"s developer Josh Wardle to discuss donating the profits. They ultimately decided on Boost! West Oakland, a charity focused on after-school tutoring and mentoring for kids in the area.
Succession star and McDonald"s spokesperson Brian Cox has a new memoir coming out, and it"s filled with juicy details on some of the roles the Scottish actor didn"t land over his lengthy career, including parts in Game of Thrones, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Harry Potter. An excerpt from the memoir was published by GQ.
Starting with Game of Thrones, Cox said he was supposed to play King Robert Baratheon, a part that ultimately went to Mark Addy. Cox said he passed on Game of Thrones because the money wasn"t very good and the part was only for one season--fans will recall that Baratheon is killed in Season 1.
«Game of Thrones went on to be a huge success and everybody involved earned an absolute fortune, of course. But when it was originally offered the money was not all that great, shall we say say,» Cox said. «Plus I was going to be killed off fairly early on, so I wouldn"t have had any of the benefits of the long-term effects of a successful series where your wages go up with each passing season.»
Warner Bros and James Gunn are continuing their partnership, this time on the small screen. Peacemaker, which is spinning out of last year"s The Suicide Squad, has premiered on the HBO Max streaming service with three raunchy, ultra-violent episodes returning John Cena to the titular role--and, surprising no one, he continues to be a pretty horrible person.
But, strangely enough, there are other characters on Peacemaker who might actually be worse than the man himself--and no, we"re not just talking about the things Peacemaker is being sent in to fight. The show also introduces a costumed character DC fans will be familiar with: Adrian Chase, AKA Vigilante (Freddie Stroma). And while Chase may be the butt of many a joke in the first three episodes of the show, he also displays some truly horrific behavior that is anything but a punchline.
Torchlight fans looking for a new way to play now that Torchlight III has been out for over a year will soon find it, as the mobile entry of the hack-and-slash action-RPG franchise Torchlight: Infinite will be entering closed beta on January 18.
Developer XD Inc. announced the upcoming beta with a new gameplay trailer, showing off some of the game"s flashy skill combos. Those who signed up on the Torchlight: Infinite website in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand will receive instructions on how to download the beta if selected.
The beta will feature four playable heroes and 24 talent trees offering over 180 abilities, according to the official press release. All dungeons, encounters, and loot drops will be randomized, and there will be no cooldown or stamina system that will prevent players from enjoying the beta. Finally, everything in the beta can be unlocked for free, including heroes, skills, maps, and items.
Disney has announced a new limited series based on The Santa Clause, and Tim Allen is returning to star in it as Scott Calvin. Allen will also be an executive producer on the project, which is coming to Disney+.
Production on The Santa Clause TV series--which doesn"t have a final title yet--will begin in Los Angeles this March. The showrunner is Jack Burditt (30 Rock, Modern Family, Frasier). A release date hasn"t been announced, but a premiere around the holidays would seemingly make sense.
Allen played Calvin, a man who unwittingly becomes Santa Clause one fateful evening, in 1994"s The Santa Clause and reprised the role in The Santa Clause 2 and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.
DC"s Flashpoint reality will be making a return later this year as a new limited series that focuses on one of the most tragic characters of that parallel universe. The original Flashpoint event was the result of the Flash messing up the timeline of the DC Universe, resulting in a darker world where Wonder Woman and Aquaman"s war had devastated the planet, Superman had been imprisoned by the US government since he crash-landed in Kansas as an infant, and Thomas Wayne had become the Batman after his son Bruce was gunned down.
The Flashpoint universe was eventually erased from the multiverse after it led into the New 52 reboot, although traces of it have popped up over the years since then. Original Flashpoint writer Geoff Johns will team up with co-writers Jeremy Adams (The Flash) and Tim Sheridan (Teen Titans) and artists Eduardo Risso and Xermanico for a new limited series called Flashpoint Beyond, which sees Thomas Wayne back in action.
Batman"s hunt for the mysterious Clockwork Killer leads him to Europe and a showdown with Aquaman, and reveals just how he survived the climax of Flashpoint. You can see a preview of the first two issues in the gallery below:
The NFL Playoffs begin this Saturday, and to mark the occasion, Madden NFL 22 is getting a big update that adds new content, including SpongeBob and TMNT gear.
The NFL and Nickelodeon are partnering for Sunday"s Wild Card game between the 49ers and Cowboys with a special broadcast on Nick, and this partnership extends to Madden 22.
EA Sports is bringing back the content from last year"s SpongeBob takeover in Madden"s The Yard mode and adding new gear based on other Nick shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Rugrats. The new event is called Nickelodeon Slime Time, and features a Nickelodeon-inspired field adored with things like SpongeBob"s pineapple house and the Krusty Krab.
In an interview with Game Informer, Barlog spoke about the PC port of God of War, and how PlayStation games on PC came to be. «Eventually, I think it reached that tipping point,» said Barlog. «When we had sent so many suggestion box suggestions that they were like, „I'm tired of hearing all this. Fine, we’ll do this.“ It’s a process. We’re still figuring it out as a company and as individual studios how to do this and what the process and strategy will be.»
In recent years, Sony has been porting some of its more popular titles to PC, with the most recent being the just-released God of War port, and the PC version of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is expected to arrive sometime in 2022 as well.
Sony"s God of War releases on PC today, opening up the game to a new audience, some of whom might play the game using an Xbox or Nintendo controller. Technical production boss Matt DeWald was asked by Game Informer about how he feels about people playing God of War with an Xbox controller, and DeWald said it"s «awesome.»
The PC release was specifically designed with the idea that some people would use a controller from a rival company, DeWald said. «We even put in all the glyphs for you so you don"t get confused by the button press. Yeah, we have no problems with that,» he said. «You can even use a Switch controller here as well. You can definitely use any of the third-party controllers.»
DeWald added: «We tried to add as many options as possible because why limit people who want to play the game?»
Any run in Project Zomboid begins with players creating their character, who will either become a grizzled survivalist or another member of the undead horde. Either way, the game offers up a buffet of options for actually creating your character. It all starts with picking an occupation and some skills, which will determine the beginning of your run and potentially dictate it until the day your character passes. These are some of the best occupations and skills you can pick in Project Zomboid.
After creating your character in Project Zomboid you"ll have to survive the game"s first days. Thankfully, we have a guide on how to live through the game"s first night.
Project Zomboid"s best occupations
Paradoxical as it may sound, one of the best occupations to give your character in Project Zomboid is none at all. As an unemployed member of society, your character is pretty much a blank slate. You can do whatever you want with them and the eight skill points you"re free to spend from the get-go. Make a character who can fish and cook, hotwire cars and build walls, it doesn"t really matter. Unemployed characters are the best for anyone looking to make a character all their own.
Not be confused with KFC"s epic no-bread-only-meat sandwich the Double Down, Rockstar Games has announced a new multiplayer mode for GTA Online called Double Down. In Double Down, you play as Franklin or Lamar in a co-op experience where you face a «brutal onslaught» of enemies.
Franklin and Lamar, as a team of two, face off against other human players in this head-to-head mode. The twist is that the attackers only have a double-barrel shotgun, while Franklin and Lamar have access to more powerful weapons to help them overcome the odds.
«Work together and use the arsenal of weapons at your fingertips to dispose of the attackers blasting at you with double barrel shotguns. Then, flip the switch and try your hand at attacking the duo as they desperately defend their turf,» reads a line from the mode"s description.
Last month, WizKids released its largest miniature to date: the Gargantuan Tiamat. This «mini» for your D&D games is over a foot tall and has a two-foot wingspan. Needless to say, it is gigantic--or even gargantuan--and is a beautiful centerpiece for your D&D setup. Now, a month after its release, WizKids has announced an unpainted version Tiamat, in case you"re looking for a larger undertaking.
Coming in February is this massive, unpainted beast. It"s exactly like the Tiamat released last month, but with no paint on it. Luckily, it"s primed, so you can get right into it if you please. WizKids sent GameSpot an unpainted Tiamat to check out, and you can see a few pictures below, compared to the painted Tiamat.
There is a little assembly for the statue, as the two wings and tail have to be attached. However, keeping them disassembled while you paint is probably the way to go for this, as it is a massive undertaking. Just make sure you don"t fully-attach the wings then try to take them off, as this will damage the figure. While the painted version of this mini costs $ 400, the MSRP of the unpainted Tiamat will be $ 350. It"s $ 50 cheaper, and you get a fun activity out of it--one that will take a long time to complete. The Unpainted Gargantuan Tiamat is available for preorder through WizKids.
A new survey from market intelligence firm Game One has revealed that the top games CEOs earned a total of $ 820 million over 2020.
The survey, as spotted by GamesIndustry.biz, covered the 42 highest earning games CEOs, with the highest earner being Robert Antokol, CEO of mobile game developer Playtika, who received a total compensation of $ 372,008,176. That translates to an hourly average of $ 186,004. For context, the federal minimum wage in the US is $ 7.25 an hour.
Coming in at second is Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, who earned $ 154,613,318 (or $ 77,306 per hour), and in third is Andrew Paradise of Skillz, who made $ 103,321,052 (or $ 51,660 per hour).
Earlier this week, a rare copy of Superman"s debut, Action Comics No. 1, sold for $ 3.18 million at auction. That"s an impressive figure, but it absolutely pales in comparison to a single page of Spider-Man art that was sold for a record $ 3.36 million this week.
The valuable page drawn by Mike Zeck is from Secret Wars #8, and features the first appearance of Spider-Man in his iconic black and white suit. Spider-Man"s original costume had been reduced to tatters during the Secret Wars, and was replaced by an alien symbiote that would eventually become one half of Venom, one of Spider-Man"s greatest adversaries.
Bidding began at $ 330,000 and eventually went over the $ 3 million mark at the Heritage Auctions event in Dallas, with the final cost smashing the previous record $ 657,250 set in 2014 for the first appearance of Wolverine in Incredible Hulk #180 by artists Herb Trimpe and Jack Abel.
Plenty of new details about the upcoming 4X strategy game Dune: Spice Wars from Shiro Games and Funcom have been revealed, including just what the game is, DLC support, inspiration from past Dune games, and more.
A FAQ for the game posted on Steam today starts off by confirming that Dune: Spice Wars is a real-time strategy game with 4X elements. «The game is real time, but the pace is slower than in a typical RTS (and you can pause and fast forward). The game also features exploration, territory control, economic growth, combat, politics, and spying, features that make it a true 4X game but do not detract from the RTS experience,» the studio said.
Spice Wars is «quite different» from developer Shiro Games" earlier title, Northgard, the developer said. «Spice Wars is on a much bigger scale, featuring politics, trading, covert operations, and a deeper resource management system,» the studio said, adding that Spice Wars is 2-3 times longer than Northgard.
Mere days into 2022, and the biggest surprise of the gaming year has already been revealed: Dog the Bounty Hunter is coming for your consoles. To be more precise, Dog--or Duane Chapman to his friends and family--will be the star of «multiple video games» produced by Virtual Interactive Technologies Corp.
«After years of sharing my life on television, I"m thrilled to bring my many stories and experiences to the video gaming environment. I"m delighted to be working with Virtual Interactive Technologies and their experienced team,» Chapman said in a press release.
CEO of Virtual Interactive Technologies Jason Garber added that «Dog"s successful career in reality TV,» is the perfect material for «exciting and engaging» video games that will feature his name, image, and likeness. There"s no word yet on if Ozzy Osborne will contribute to the game"s soundtrack.
Actress Neve Campbell has shared a wild story about getting attacked by a bear on a movie set many years ago where she was dragged through the forest in a sequence gone wrong.
Speaking on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Campbell said this happened in Canada when she was 17 years old. She was playing a character who was «one with the animals,» and one particular scene called for her to be chased by a bear. The crew gave Campbell a bottle of Coca-Cola to feed the bear, which created an environment where the bear was on a «sugar rush,» Campbell said. She was then asked to stick her hand in a honey jar and run away as the bear chases her to complete the scene.
«They said, „Dip your hand in honey and just run, and when you get to the tree over there, turn around and stick your hand out and feed the bear.“ I of course, wanting to please everyone, was like, „OK!,“» Campbell said.
A new trailer for Sony"s Gran Turismo 7 has landed, showing off a lap at Daytona International Speedway. As you"ll see in the video, it looks very, very nice, especially given that the race is happening around sunset. Check it out below.
Gran Turismo 7 launches on March 4 for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The new gameplay footage comes from the PS5 edition of the racing game.
Gran Turismo 7 was originally expected to release in 2021, but «critical aspects» of the game"s development were impacted by COVID-19, so Sony pushed the game to 2022.
